Social Skills

Social Skills Definition

What are social skills? Social skills can be defined as the set of skills people use to interact and communicate with one another.

Examples of social skills include: how to greet someone, turn-taking in conversation, skills involved in maintaining conversation, engaging in eye contact, to name a few.

Targeting Social Skills

In deciding which social skills to teach, it is often helpful to start with more basic skills, such as saying hello to a friend. It is also useful to break skills down into smaller parts. For example, in saying hello to a friend, part of the teaching process may involve explanation of nonverbal communication such as facing the person you are talking to before saying hello. While this skill may seem obvious, it is often difficult for children with social skill challenges.
