Teaching Social Skills

It is helpful to break down social skills into small pieces in order to teach them in steps. For example, a skill such as "stay with your friend" can be parsed into the steps: stay in the same room, play with the same toys, and follow the leader. Depending on the skill level of the particular child, it may be necessary to teach each step individually.

Sometimes as children get older it gets more difficult to guide their social interactions. As they become pre-teens and teenagers, they may resist interference or attempts to mold their social skills. It becomes necessary to use subtler methods shaping these skills.
